I ran into Whitney Way Thore from the TLC show My Big Fat Fabulous Life while at starbucks earlier today. I am the tallest fan she’s met at 6’10”. Her entire show is filmed in my town, so I enjoy watching it to see places that I know, and also, she is really quite funny.
Also, the Subaroo is behind me, so I guess it’s sorta famous too.

A puny 6’5”. I’m 29, and while I stopped growing at around 19/20, over the last two years I’ve put on an inch in height. Fresh air and exercise? Who knows, but you may not be done yet.

For some things maybe. Not very good at basketball though...

She posted a video on youtube of herself dancing last year, got about 7.5 million views, and so she ended up getting a reality show on TLC. It also helped that she has a good personality and was a popular radio show host on one of the local radio stations. I’ve been watching the show, because it’s cool that the entire show is filmed in my town, and I know a lot of the places where she goes.

I suck at basketball haha. At least you can basically fit in any car.

I was just in Poland and Israel a few weeks ago, and if the cars in both of those places were typically like that Renault size wise.

I am actually disappointed in you

really? I love most people, but I have to take pause when someone would be on a show where they are labeled fat and fabulous. I wasn’t aiming to be mean at all, just trying to understand something I loathe - reality shows
![]() 05/06/2015 at 19:22 |

Basically everyone under 21 here has a car that size out of necessity, then a lot of people run them out of cheapness. It’s a bad place to be a tall person driving wise.

Where do you live?

Maybe it’s different in the US reality shows then, where the term ‘big fat’ actually means a big and fat person. Reality programming on this side of the water uses the same term, but meant as term of colloquial extravagance, rather than the actual size of the people in the show.
Admittedly I didn’t realise what her show was called, and thought you were pulling her up on her size alone.

oh no, I have plenty of people I know and love that push the scales down into the earth more than they should. None of them are proud of it, and I actually feel a little bit of anger towards a show that would glorify being so. Not because I think people of girth should be ashamed, but I think it is a bad idea for Americans to say, oh yeah, I can be fat and famous and all is groovy in the world - Ill just have another 3 hamburgers from Tricky D’s. It is too easy for someone who is trying to lose weight to say fuck it and dive back in. Obesity is truly a fiscal and health issue over here. Hell I need to lose a few pounds and cut back on the beer. Then again there are plenty of people who are just big no matter what they do, and that is fine too

There’s a similar situation over here. The poor education on, and the high availability of; junk foods is leading to rapidly increasing child and teen obesity. Our national health service is under a lot of pressure as it is and as such, being publicly funded through taxation, leads to stress and malcontent around groups that could change their habits to lessen the load. Smokers (I am one), heavy drinkers, obese people, drug abusers... all receive free healthcare no matter their condition, while mental health, home care services and nurse training are becoming severely under-funded and under-staffed. It’s a hard fix though.

totally a hard fix, but you need to start somewhere. When it is glorified in media - and I have not seen this show so I cannot comment - it makes it even more tough. Just the name of the show made me cringe. I was a smoker for a long time. I know that struggle. I still smoke once in a while if I drink enough beer but man was that tough.

You’re 18 and 6’ 10”?! I’m 18 and 5’ 10” lol.

To be fair, she has PCOS. This is a hormone issue that makes it very easy to gain weight and very hard to loose it. Most of the show is about her struggle to lose weight while still loving the body she has.

Both of my parents are somewhat tall, so their genes made me mega tall.

You know what they say about tall people!
They can’t fit in small cars.
